Measuring Imbalance

The story begins in 2015, when Alfa Laval started looking for a company to install a new overspeed machine in their Kraków plant.

This process requires spinning centrifuge components to roughly twice their nominal speed—meaning masses up to 490 kg rotate at up to 20,000 rpm.

Dynamic balancer for measuring centrifuge drum imbalance

For two years we went through quoting, testing different ideas, visiting the parent company in Sweden, and meeting with technologists. In 2017 we kicked off the project. A few months later the new overspeed machines were deployed at the client site and performing their job. We thought that would be the end of the collaboration, since the client typically doesn’t rely on special-purpose machines like the ones we build.

Then Sweden invited us to discuss another project.

The client wanted a dynamic balancer capable of measuring centrifuge drum imbalance and, additionally, testing drum functionality

– closing the drums at a specified speed with a water stream, then filling them and performing a “discharge,” where the bowl opens and expels the water at high rotational speed.

Functional drum testing
Closing drums at set speeds with water
Discharge: opening the bowl and ejecting water at high rpm
